A Refuge for Gentle Giants: How Kulen Elephant Forest Sanctuary Transforms Lives

Tucked away in the dense forests of northern Siem Reap, the Kulen Elephant Forest Sanctuary emerges as a beacon of hope and healing for elephants retired from the tourism industry. This sanctuary, established by David-Jaya Piot in December 2019, offers a serene retreat for elephants who have spent much of their lives serving tourists at Angkor Wat.

The journey to the sanctuary starts with an enchanting drive along National Road 64, marked by the iconic elephant statues that guide visitors into the heart of the Bos Thom forest community. Here, visitors can safely observe these majestic creatures from their vehicles, respecting their space and the natural environment.

David-Jaya Piot, a Siem Reap native from a renowned hotelier family, ventured into this noble cause following a ban on elephant rides in the area. His vision was clear: to provide these elephants a life of dignity and peace. The sanctuary spans 400 hectares and is currently home to 11 elephants, cared for by a dedicated team of 18 mahouts under the guidance of the experienced French-Swedish zookeeper, Dan Albert John Koeh.

The sanctuary not only serves as a safe haven but also educates visitors on the natural behaviors of elephants, allowing them to roam freely without the demands of performance or rides. The daily management of the sanctuary, often challenging, reflects a deep commitment to animal welfare and community engagement, with David personally funding the project through tough times like the COVID-19 pandemic.

Tourists visiting the sanctuary can walk alongside these gentle giants, experiencing their majesty up close. This controlled interaction ensures a respectful and safe environment for both elephants and visitors, promoting a deeper understanding and appreciation for these incredible animals.

David highlights the significant costs associated with caring for these elephants, emphasizing the sanctuary’s role in supporting the local economy by sourcing food from nearby farmers. This initiative not only sustains the elephants but also provides stable jobs for the local community, reducing the need for residents to seek employment abroad.

In the heart of Kulen Elephant Forest Sanctuary, the sight of elephants indulging in their natural habitats—whether playing in the mud or foraging through the forest—is a testament to the sanctuary’s success in providing these majestic animals with the freedom and respect they deserve.
