Demand leads to new transport routes between Thailand and Laos

In response to growing demand for travel between Thailand and Laos, the Transport Company, a state enterprise under Thailand’s Ministry of Transport, is exploring the addition of five new bus routes that will connect major Thai cities directly to destinations in Laos. This development aims to enhance cross-border tourism and facilitate easier travel between the two neighboring countries.

Expanding the Network for Enhanced Connectivity

The proposed new routes include:

  • Chiang Mai to Boten
  • Bangkok to Savannakhet
  • Pattaya to Pakse
  • Pattaya to Vientiane
  • Pattaya to Savannakhet

These routes are designed to complement the existing network of nine bus routes that currently facilitate 92 trips per day from Thailand to six cities in Laos. Atthawit Rakjamroon, the acting president of the Transport Company, highlighted that these routes have seen an average daily ridership of 3,000 passengers, a number that has steadily increased post-COVID-19.

Supporting Regional Tourism and Transport Integration

The introduction of these routes is expected to further stimulate tourism and support the local economies of the connected regions. The strategic connectivity to airports and upcoming high-speed train services, such as the one linking Udon Thani International Airport with Vang Vieng set to launch in November, underscores a significant step towards creating an integrated public transport network across the borders.

This initiative aligns with the Transport Ministry’s objective to foster seamless travel and deepen the tourism ties between Thailand and Laos, promising an easier and more enjoyable travel experience for tourists and local commuters alike.
