Staying at these two properties turned my Siem Reap journey into an unforgettable blend of history, culture, and indulgence. If you’re planning a trip to Cambodia, make room in your itinerary for these luxury havens—they’re every bit as magical as the temples themselves.

Unveiling history, luxury, and indulgence in Cambodia’s cultural heartland.

It has been a few years since I last stepped foot in Siem Reap, and I’d forgotten how magical this little city towards the north west of Cambodia was. Stepping into Siem Reap is like walking through layers of history. From the majestic Angkor Wat to the city’s vibrant streets, it’s a destination that charms you at every turn. My recent trip was made even more memorable by staying at two iconic hotels: the FCC Angkor by Avani and the Park Hyatt Siem Reap. Each offered a unique blend of heritage and luxury, creating experiences I can’t wait to share.

FCC Angkor by Avani: A Journey Through Time

The moment I arrived at the FCC Angkor, I felt like I was stepping back in time—but with all the comforts of modern luxury. Located in the historic French Quarter, this hotel has a fascinating past. Originally the residence of the French Consul General, it later became the Siem Reap chapter of the Foreign Correspondents Club. That legacy is woven into its design, from the typewriters in the rooms to the murals inspired by Angkorian temples.

My Room
I stayed in a Premier Room, where colonial charm met Khmer artistry. Brass basins, silk-upholstered furniture, and mosaic tiles added a touch of elegance, while thoughtful nods to its journalistic past, like a vintage radio and typewriter, brought character. My veranda overlooked the saltwater pool—a serene spot perfect for unwinding after a day of exploration.

The Food
Dinner at the Mansion Restaurant was a revelation. I started with tuna ceviche and moved on to a hearty tom yum soup packed with prawns and mushrooms. For dessert, the shaved ice with coconut cream and local mango was a refreshing finish. Later, under a century-old tree, I enjoyed retro tunes performed live at the Scribe Bar—a perfect end to the evening.

Highlight:
The Khmer herbal compress massage at the Visaya Spa melted away all the aches from temple trekking.

Insider Tip:
Bring mosquito repellent or try the hotel’s locally made after-bite spray—it works wonders!

Park Hyatt Siem Reap: Contemporary Luxury in the Heart of the City

While FCC Angkor felt steeped in history, the Park Hyatt offered a sanctuary of contemporary elegance. Tucked just steps away from Siem Reap’s bustling streets, it’s an oasis of calm.

My Suite
I splurged on the Two-Bedroom Pool Suite, and it was worth every penny. Spacious and refined, the suite featured a private plunge pool surrounded by lush greenery. It quickly became my go-to spot for morning coffee and late-night stargazing. Every detail, from the silk cushions to the marble bath, exuded sophistication.

Culinary Adventures
The Dining Room showcased the best of Khmer and French cuisine, with dishes like curry-infused crab and perfectly seared beef tenderloin. Afternoon tea at The Living Room was a delight, featuring crab croquettes and chilli-spiced curry puffs. Early mornings called for hearty Cambodian breakfasts at The Glasshouse Deli, fuelling me for the adventures ahead.

Exploring Beyond the Hotel
The Park Hyatt’s central location made it easy to explore Siem Reap. A sunrise Vespa tour of Angkor Wat left me awestruck, while a visit to Phnom Kulen National Park offered a refreshing break amidst waterfalls and wildlife. Back at the hotel, the palm-fringed pool provided the perfect retreat.

Highlight:
Watching the sunrise over Angkor Wat—it’s a memory that will stay with me forever.

Insider Tip:
Book the sunrise tour in advance for a quieter, more magical experience at the temples.
