Join us on a journey through Cambodia’s lesser-known wonders, where authentic experiences and breathtaking landscapes await.

Cambodia is often celebrated for the iconic Angkor Wat and bustling cities like Phnom Penh and Siem Reap. However, the northeastern regions and coastal gems offer equally captivating experiences for the adventurous traveler seeking a deeper connection with the country’s rich culture and natural beauty.

A Heartfelt Farewell to Ou Chum

After a rewarding month of volunteering as an English teacher at a small non-profit school in Ou Chum, a village in northeastern Cambodia, my partner Colleen joined me to explore more of this enchanting land. Leaving the village, we transitioned to a modest hotel overlooking a serene lake in the center of Banlung, the regional capital. The lake’s tranquil beauty, especially at night when illuminated by lights, set the tone for our upcoming adventures.

Banlung: Gateway to Natural Wonders

The countryside surrounding Banlung is a tapestry of farmlands, rubber tree and cashew nut orchards, and lush green forests. Just outside the city lies Boeng Yeak Lom, a stunning crater lake formed in the cone of a collapsed volcano and encircled by vibrant forests. The crystal-clear waters and peaceful atmosphere make it a must-visit spot for nature lovers.

We ventured to the Kinchaan Waterfall, one of three waterfalls near Banlung. Although the road to the largest, Chaa Ong, was too slippery due to rain, Kinchaan offered its own charm. Viewing the cascade from a suspension bridge and wandering through the surrounding forest provided a refreshing escape. Be prepared for steep stairs leading down to the falls—caution is advised!

A Journey Down the Tonle Srepok River

In Lumphat, we embarked on a flat-bottom canoe trip along the Tonle Srepok River, which flows from Vietnam into Cambodia. This river is said to have inspired scenes in the movie “Apocalypse Now,” but today, it offers a peaceful and scenic journey through untouched landscapes.

Historic Temples and Thrilling Rides in Preah Vihear

En route to Siem Reap, we stopped in the northern city of Preah Vihear to visit the Prasat Preah Vihear Temple. Perched atop a mountain near the Thai border, the temple is accessible via a steep road best navigated by motorcycle or pickup truck. Opting for the motorcycle, we experienced an exhilarating ride to the summit. The temple’s multi-level ruins culminate in a serene shrine occupied by a Buddhist monk, offering panoramic views over Cambodia and Thailand.

Siem Reap: Beyond Angkor Wat

Siem Reap is a treasure trove of history and culture. The legendary Angkor Wat, a UNESCO World Heritage site, lived up to its reputation with its massive limestone structures and intricate carvings. Surrounded by an impressive moat, the temple complex reflects the grandeur of the Khmer Empire. Nearby, the Angkor Thom complex and Ta Prohm Temple—famous for its appearance in Angelina Jolie’s “Tomb Raider”—captivate visitors with towering trees intertwining with ancient ruins.

For a deeper understanding of these sites, we recommend visiting the Angkor National Museum before exploring the temples.

Confronting History at Tuol Sleng and the Killing Fields

In Phnom Penh, we faced the somber history of Cambodia’s past at the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum and the Killing Fields of Choeung Ek. These sites serve as stark reminders of the atrocities committed during the Khmer Rouge regime. The emotional impact is profound, but understanding this history is essential to appreciating the resilience of the Cambodian people.

Relaxation on Koh Rong Sanloem

To conclude our journey, we sought tranquility on the island of Koh Rong Sanloem. This idyllic paradise boasts Saracen Bay, a two-and-a-half-kilometer stretch of white sand beach lined with low-key restaurants and modest resorts. A short walk across the island led us to Lazy Beach, a secluded haven perfect for relaxation. Snorkeling trips revealed vibrant coral reefs teeming with marine life around Koh Koun Island. Koh Rong Sanloem offered the perfect serene ending to our Cambodian adventure.
