Con Dao Island’s Coral Reefs Get a Clean Start as Divers Remove Tons of Waste
Off the serene coast of Con Dao Island in Ba Ria – Vung Tau Province, a critical underwater clean-up operation is underway. Scuba divers have been vigorously working to remove over two metric tons of debris, primarily composed of discarded fishing nets and ropes, from the island’s coral reefs. This initiative, conducted by the Con Dao National Park, highlights a growing concern over marine pollution and its detrimental effects on these vital ecosystems.
A Beneath-the-Surface Battle
The clean-up efforts, which began in late July, focus on the reefs surrounding Bay Canh, Cau, Ba, and Tre Lon Islets. These areas, known for their biodiversity, have suffered from the accumulation of trash over an expanse of approximately 600 hectares.
