Hue City, Vietnam

Local hotels and travel companies commit to sustainable practices under a WWF-backed initiative.

In a significant stride towards environmental sustainability, the Tourism Association of Thua Thien-Hue, alongside WWF-Vietnam, reviewed the success of a pioneering initiative aimed at reducing plastic waste in Hue city. This project, funded by WWF-Norway, seeks to position Hue as a leader in plastic waste management in Vietnam’s central region.

During a conference held on August 6, Dinh Manh Thang, the chairperson of the association, highlighted the impactful measures undertaken since August 2023. These include extensive training sessions for 120 association members and the adoption of plastic reduction strategies by 22 hotels. These establishments have pledged to implement innovative practices to minimize single-use plastics, spearheading efforts to transform Hue into a zero-waste destination.

The event also witnessed a renewed commitment from 20 hotels and travel companies, which signed on to continue their plastic waste reduction efforts. This collective pledge underscores the growing movement towards sustainable tourism practices in the region.

In recognition of these environmental efforts, the Vietnam Tourism Association awarded certificates of merit to the Thua Thien-Hue Tourism Association and 12 local businesses for their dedication to sustainability. Moreover, the Hue People’s Committee honored seven hotels for their leadership in plastic waste reduction.

This initiative not only enhances Hue’s appeal as a sustainable travel destination but also sets a benchmark for other regions to emulate, reinforcing the global call for environmental responsibility within the tourism sector.
